That for unknown reasons your step-dad hung the clean laundry outside to dry, and didn't bring it in. And there are strong gusts of wind, and a good chance of rain during the night. So unless you want to be picking soggy laundry out of trees and a swamp in the morning, you have to go get the laundry off the line, which isn't reached by the outside light, so its dark and shadowy and not fun.
